Supergeo Enhances the Agricultural Productivity in St. Kitts and Nevis

SuperGIS Desktop, the full-featured GIS software developed by Supergeo, was first introduced to an international project aimed to improve the crop quality and safety in 2015. It is an international collaboration project between International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) in Taiwan and Department of Agriculture in St. Kitts and Nevis. Over the past three years, the distribution channels of local farm products have widely opened up in most of the hotels, restaurants, and supermarkets in this Caribbean country with a ten-fold increase in sales volume. This success is undoubtedly a giant leap forward for the domestic agriculture in St. Kitts and Nevis, wiping out the negative images of its farm goods, such as low productivity, questionable quality and food safety in the past. After implementing this project, the prospect of transforming to precision agriculture also becomes closer. The sweet fruits of success were significantly contributed by the introduction of GIS Software!

With the assist of SuperGIS Desktop, the project team can filter and analyze the soil fertility data, such as the amount of potassium and the pH value. Then, the calculated results can be visualized on maps. What’s more, the researchers have successfully combined all these soil data with the other crop cultivation data to draw suitability maps for 23 commonly planted fruits and vegetables, and 3 flower species. The maps precisely illustrate where are the desirable areas to grow a particular crop, and will become a critical reference for the officials to make more judicious decisions in future farmland planning.

The Minister of Agriculture in St. Kitts and Nevis speaks highly of the outcome of this project, and Supergeo is also glad to share this success. All team workers from both countries would like to show special thanks to Dr. Lin from Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) for her prophetic vision of applying SuperGIS products to this case, making the most of its capability. Most importantly, it becomes meaningful for the diplomacy and friendship between Taiwan and St. Kitts and Nevis.
