A more intelligent AED device, aiming to improve emergency utility!

Success rate of first aid can be as high as 90%. Therefore, since 2013 Ministry of Health and Welfare has actively promoted the installation of AED (Automated External Defibrillator). Until now, there are nearly 10,000 AED devices have been installed, but yet the utility rate is less than 5%. As a result, many patients might have missed the golden rescue time before sending to the hospital.


Currently, there have been several issues that resulted in the low utility rate of AED device in Taiwan, which can be categorized as follows:

  1. Those people around the patient at the scene of accident could not find the accurate location of nearby AED device, which delayed the time of rescue.
  2. AED Administrator did not know where the accident had happened and could not bring the AED and rescue the patient instantly.
  3. The general public have legal concerns about the emergency asylum and immunity of civil law and criminal law.   

Goals & Solution

In order to improve low utility rate of AED in Taiwan, Taichung government responds the central government’s “Smart City and County” plan and takes the lead in promoting “Smart AED Alarm System”. This project is led by the Taiwanese geospatial technology company, Supergeo Technologies Inc., together with the IoT developer, AI Value. The ultimate objective is improving public awareness of how to use AED device under emergency situation, as “Use more AED and save more lives”.RR


Once the Emergency Control Center receive the report, controller can instantly search for AED device near the accident location and they can activate alarm system remotely or send alarm to mobile app. At that time, Smart AED Alarm System will flash light and make noise to attract the attention to the passersby. Once a person picks up the Smart AED Alarm System, the screen will automatically display the location of nearby patient, therefore he/she can bring the AED device to the accident location for rescuing.


In the first phase of installation, there have been about 100 places in Taichung have installed the Smart AED Alarm System, including Taichung City Council, Transportation Bureau Taichung City Government, Taichung International Airport, Guguan Visitor Center etc. Based on the analysis by Supergeo, with the application of Smart AED Alarm System and more comprehensive educational trainings, the emergency utility rate is estimated to exceed 5% and also reduce the time for sending AED device to accident location by less than 7 minutes. In addition, it can further foster the development of Taiwan’s first Smart AED Alarm System and data center, as well as together integrate the Internet of Things industry, geospatial technology industry, smart medical industry and OpenData industry to create blue ocean business opportunities in the electronic medical service industry and expand the demand for new application services.
