Supplement and Transportation of Public Bike


Connecting the communication among Metro stations in Kaohsiung and city center, city bus and school bus are the primary vehicles for students of Kaohsiung Municipal Chungshan Senior High School. However, the route of city bus was suspended; therefore students who used to take city bus need to take free shuttle instead and spend more commute time between school and home for slower driving and longer route.

For this reason, public bike rental system around school becomes a new option for students. Public bike provides better mobility than other vehicle. For students, riding bike to school is more convenient than taking free shuttle. But they might face two 


common drawbacks, shortage of available bikes or available docks to check-out. As a result, students of Kaohsiung Municipal Chungshan Senior High School utilize desktop GIS to analyze and discuss strategy of public bike supplement and transportation through this research for assisting in solving bike rental and return issue.

The four main purposes that this research focuses on: are
1. Find the strategy to supplement and transport with public bikes 
2. Evaluate utilization of the public bikes 
3. Discuss interaction among bike rental and return and each rental station 
4. Analyze why and how long people use public bikes
Data Collection: Statistics analyzation of public bike in Kaohsiung City and Questionnaire Investigation
Current status of each public bike rental station on Kaohsiung City Public Bike website is recorded as bar chart with Excel. Afterwards, researchers picked 6 rental stations for questionnaire investigation on week days and another 6 stations on weekend according to analyzing result of statistics.

Coordinate System Transformation: From latitude and longitude coordinates into TM2 coordinates (TWD 97)
Latitude and longitude coordinates on Google Map are transformed into TM2 coordinates. After that, SuperGIS Desktop is employed to display the stations with XY coordinates with other layers.

Mapping and Analyzing: design map with buffer analysis in SuperGIS Desktop.
In this stage, researchers utilized SuperGIS Desktop to overlay layers of Taiwan rail, Taiwan high speed rail, metro routes and SuperGIS Online maps and created distribution map of public bike rental stations.

The research finding is displayed as graphs to illustrate how people utilize public bikes and result of analyzing relation between rental rate and trips. Moreover, maps showing bike rental and return status are created through SuperGIS Desktop to assist researchers in integrating data and spatial relations for performing research finding distinctly. On these maps, graduated symbols are adopted to denote the number of people renting or returning bike in each rental station. In this way, researchers can tell whether people rent and return bikes at the same station.

In this project, a few important metro stations are set as center for buffer analysis with one to three kilometers as buffer range. Through map of buffer analysis result drawn with SuperGIS Desktop, researchers can easily view the number of facilities near to each rental station such as school, shops, and even other rental stations.

According to conclusion of the research findings, a rental station possessing more than one characteristic, including “With more facilities around”, “With more public bike rental stations around” and “Closer to facilitates, other rentalstations or residential districts”, provides local residents and tourists with more convenience in utilizing public bikes. To further illustrate research findings, researchers especially employed SuperGIS Desktop to display visualized data on map.

“With more facilities around”:
A rental station with more facilities around helps people to reach destinations easier.As shown in the map, “Buffer Analysis of Facilities around Ecological District Metro Station”, rental station here is build up near by exits of Ecological District Metro Station. Furthermore, in addition to library, department store and botanic garden nearby, Taiwan High Speed Rail Station and Scenic Area are also in the neighborhood of this rental station. Thus, public bikes at this rental station are used more often on weekends and holidays.

“With more public bike rental stations around”:
People have to rent and return bike at rental stations. Therefore, most bike renters do not ride too far away from these stations.

“Closer to facilitates, other rental stations or residential districts”:
Based on P-median Problem, the more transit demand between the rental station and the destination exits, the shorter the distance between the two sites should be. Besides, since public bikes can be used for free for the first hour, shortening distance between two sites will improve utilization of public bikes of each rental station.
Take Kaohsiung Arena rental station as example, this rental station is at a distance about 10 meters from Kaohsiung Arena Metro Station, 400 meters from department store and night market and 800 meters from another public rental station. It is apparently convenient for people to rent, return bikes and move to facilities nearby by public bikes from this rental station.

There are a great number of factors influencing the utilization of public bikes. Based on research methods, SuperGIS Desktop is employed to operate buffer, analyze data and display maps for comprehending utilization frequency and effect of each rental station and evaluating the necessity to increase supplement frequency or to modify time interval of transportation. In the future, utilization of public bikes can be further improved based on this research through evaluation of more factors.
