Introduction to Metadata

Metadata is a kind of data used to describe the features of the file itself. With the structured feature of metadata, the files and the related descriptive information can facilitate users to manage, maintain, and search the digital data or layers. In addition, the copyright announcement and the distribution right also belong to the metadata.

To help the users understand the features of the data and avoid using incorrect data, standard metadata formats and providing complete data description are very important. Besides, standard metadata can raise the query efficiency and also allow users to obtain the digital data and layers rapidly. Metadata is not the goal of production but the reference source to increase the spatial data application and to help you analyze and interpret GIS data more effectively.

In addition to data management, another task of SuperGIS DataManager is to edit the metadata of image files. With the complete metadata, you can obtain or manage the data more efficiently. For example, you can find the layer you need by search function, and you can find out the source, contents, publisher, copyright, etc of the image data to use the data effectively and correctly.

SuperGIS DataManager now supports the FGDC metadata format defined by the Federal Geographic Data Committee.
