What are Topology rules?

Topology rules define the spatial connectivity related in a spatial layer or in different spatial layers. Topology Analyst offers multiple topology rules based on the different purpose and spatial connectivity. Some of the topology rules allow users to create the spatial connectivity for the target layer itself. For instance, the ranges of townships or the ranges of administrative areas are supposed to be polygons that do not overlap with others. Some of the topology rules create the spatial connectivity relationships for two different spatial layers through the use of the aided layer. For instance, users can demand that each cadastral area should have an address centroid inside, the bus stop must be located on the bus route, etc.

The purpose of the topology rules is to find out the topology violations(Point Errors, Line Errors, Area Errors) and fix them. Different fixes are available for different topology rules. We can fix the errors by selecting the areas of topology violation on the map using Fix Topology Error tool or by selecting a fix method in Topology Error Viewer.

Topology rules can be classified based on point, line and polygon. Please see the tables in the following sections for the detailed description.
