Exercise 1- Start Spatial Analyst Extension in SuperGIS Desktop: to partition the school districts

There are a variety of rules to partition the school districts of elementary school and junior high school, for instance, the transportation factor, the transportation route and distance will be used as the standard; three kilometers and five kilometers are the basic ranges respective for elementary and junior high school, then partition the school district on neighborhood, village. If there are new schools, new communities established or old schools, administration area adjustment or irresistible factors occur, the authorities concerned will re-partition the school districts. But the school district problem does not exist in university, because students of university come from everywhere. However, some people still will pick up and study at the university close to home. So in this exercise, please practice how to partition the school districts with "number of students of universities in Taipei."

1.Load the Taipei city layer(Taipei.shp) and school layer(Uni.shp).

2.Right-click the school layer and open the attribute table. You'll see the number of students field (Student).

3.Select "Spatial Analyst">"Distance">"Straight Line."

4.Straight Line window shows up, please follow the steps as below:

i.Select the University layer(Uni).

ii.You can change the sell size, but in this exercise, we will keep the setting.

iii.Check "Allocation Raster", select the storage path and enter file name.

iv. Allocation_Uni is the possible school district range for universities in Taipei. We can find that in the regions where schools are dense, the school district range will be small. It is just like that if the shops of same type with equivalent capability are located nearby, the competition will be rather fierce. The more shops of the same type are located in a region, the fewer customers will be obtained.
