The Platform Mashed up Biodiversity Information and Geographic Information System


Protecting and managing biodiversity effectively can ensure the species’ survivals as well as keep sustainable developments of human beings. To conduct biodiversity conservation practically, encourage and attach significance to sustainable utilization of  biodiversity resources, and fairly, reasonably share the advantage of genetic resources utilization, what government organizations in Taiwan should do are not only ensuring diversity in gene as well as in species and in ecosystem, but evaluating and comprehending threats that cause the decline of biodiversity, assisting local government organizations and non-government organizations in arranging for measures in sustainable utilization of biological resources as well as in educating residents to value knowledge of biodiversity and promoting biological technologies and biosafety management.


To follow the trend in response to the biodiversity conservation which is valued steadily in Taiwan, the Kaohsiung City Biodiversity Database arranged by Kaohsiung City government was built in 2012. Nowadays, one of the primary goals for Kaohsiung City government to achieve is to regularly renew the website which employs Kaohsiung City Biodiversity Database. Also, it seems that a biodiversity information exchange platform is necessary for enabling the public to search and query the real-time biodiversity information. In addition to the related information, the platform is also required to provide the integrated statistics of biodiversity-analyzed data as the reference basis for biodiversity conservation measure planning.


1. Expand Essential Data for Kaohsiung City Biodiversity and the Species Distribution Database:
To do so, the system development team worked with personnel of Kaohsiung City government to collect, integrate Kaohsiung-area biodiversity data and update species distribution information.

2. Update Content of Kaohsiung City Biodiversity Website and Database Functions:
Including user interface, menu and guide, content of Kaohsiung City Biodiversity website and its database functions are updated, becoming a more friendly and considerate platform.

3. Build the Biodiversity Information Exchange Platform:
Data within Kaohsiung City Biodiversity Information Exchange Platform, including species data and monitoring data, are mashed up with those stored in the Biodiversity Database, providing environmental protection organizations, research institutions, government departments and even the public with an interactive platform to query information, upload and download detail data indicating species distribution. Therefore, further biodiversity conservation and data maintenance services can be conducted to make effect in data sharing among different parts.

Also, the system manager and users are able to manage and publish species data and monitoring data. Additionally, the platform enable managers and data providers to establish data analyses such as species information querying, map layer overlaying and long-term trend displaying.

The development results include species information maintenance and updating, and geographic information overlaying.

1. Species Information:

Related data are all integrated then included in the records of field surveys for the exchange platform to interconnect. Besides, the Biodiversity Database also gathers and mashes up Kaohsiung biodiversity data, including economy survey plans over the years, results of Environmental Impact Assessment, etc. 

The new Kaohsiung City Biodiversity Information Exchange Platform is built based on species code recorded in TaiBNE species database of Academia Sinica. And its bioinformatics knowledge database is designed to interconnect species data from Taiwan Encyclopedia of Life (TaiEOL), introducing wide-ranging species information, morphological features, ecological characteristics, habitats and so on.

2. Map Layer and Geographic Information:
The system development team converted the points data they collected for indicating species distribution into raster layers for the first step, then developed biodiversity distribution maps and pie chart layers showing species quantity with Google Map, and added functions like querying, positioning, layer switching, etc. Furthermore, geographic data related to urban geography and natural environmental information of Kaohsiung City such as layers provided by Forestry Bureau, Construction and Planning Agency, Water Resources Agency, the Urban Development Bureau (Kaohsiung City Government) and Land Administration Bureau (Kaohsiung City Government) are also added into the database, supporting researchers to overlay layers and conduct analyses.

Integrating with database, GIS data and diverse data analysis functions, Kaohsiung City Biodiversity Information Exchange Platform displays ecological information, biodiversity information and geographic information maps at once on the platform (website) in a user-friendly way, providing personnel from related organizations and education institutions and even the public with a useful platform. In promoting biodiversity conservation knowledge, the platform plays a significant and beneficial role. Moreover, the feature that biodiversity database integrating with GIS enables users to display information of every species in Kaohsiung City by maps on the platform; in this way, platform viewers can apprehend required information at a glance and know economical conservation farther. In fact, Kaohsiung City Biodiversity Information Exchange Platform can do more than that; the data analysis functions within the platform allow species-research professionals like surveillance personnel and researchers to query and analyze species change trend data for subsequent studies and plans, assisting Kaohsiung City government in improving every aspect and development of species conservation plans.
