As the development of GIS become more and more mature, GIS is not only widely applied to various fields to solve numerous kinds of spatial problems but also plays a crucial role in promoting the electronic application in campus. Now, GIS becomes the indispensable element in establishing the campus guide system.
Sustainable traffic management and community traffic system is the direction that Kainan University establishes the Kainan University Campus Information Web. The university also intends to offer the quicker and more convenient campus information and services for the university’s staffs, students as well as the public.
Kainan University Campus Information Web based on Web-GIS architecture is a website providing with the campus information. The application adopts Microsoft Access as the goal platform for saving, maintaining and managing the data. In addition, it applies SuperWebGIS as the map server platform, which can publish the statistic data and maps stored in the goal as map services to the Internet. The users from everywhere can easily access the needed campus information through the general browsers, like Internet Explorer or Firefox, without the need of installing any internet browser Plug-ins.
Kainan University Campus Information Web, a website created by SuperWebGIS, plays as a platform for the university staff, students and the public to quickly understand the Kainan University campus with complete campus information.
Kainan University Campus Information Web provides three main sub-systems, Campus Life Map, Before-Go System and Carpool System, to meet all users’ needs.
1. Campus Life Map:
The system integrates the spatial query and electronic maps to offer complete campus information for the school’s staff and students. The sub-system has two sorts of functions, Landmark Query and Living Query.
- Landmark Query:
The function provides various landmark classifications, like leisure, public, shopping, traffic, travel and business, to facilitate users to quickly query the landmarks surrounding the campus. After the needed landmark is selected, the landmark will automatically be centered on the map. In addition, users can use provided navigation tools to zoom in/out or pan map to easily understand the terrain and locations nearby the school.
- Living Query:
The function also provides many classifications based on food, accommodation, traffic and recreation. It not only allows users to conveniently gain the complete living information but also helps freshmen to get themselves involved in the campus life soon.
2. Before-Go System:
The system offers the before-go traffic information for the staff, students, students’ parents, and the general public. Query items are divided into three parts, Private Vehicles, School Bus and Public Transports, to meet all users’ needs.
- Private Vehicles:
Users can sign the departure and destination locations by tapping on the electronic map. Then the system would automatically calculate the shortest path for users to reference.
- School Bus:
The function shows the school bus route, stops, timetable, and fare.
- Public Transports:
The target users are those who want to reach the school by public transport. Because users can go there by varied public transport from different cities, the function provides detailed information, such as station locations, fare, route information, stops, timetable, and etc.
3. Carpool System:
To promote the idea of earth sustainable development and to support the government policy of energy efficiency and carbon reduction, Kainan University Campus Information Web in particular provides Carpool System to encourage the school’s staff and students to share a car to travel to and forth school. As long as the account is registered, users can select the departure and destination locations on the system. Then, the system would assist users in searching an appropriate driver or passengers to share a car according to the selected departure and destination locations. In addition, users can edit and post the carpool route anytime, which improves the added-value of carpool information.
