| Scenario |
 |
It's the most famous scenic spot, Queen's Head, in Yeliu Geological Park. |
|
| Yeliu is a famous scenic attraction on the coast of northern Taiwan. Many unique coastal geological rocks there are important resources for tourists. A good mobile tourism guide device can help tourists to understand more about the natural background and legends of these beautiful rocks. |
| |
| Challenges |
| The administrative unit has professional guides at the park to tell stories about the scenic points. This service needs to be booked before hand and be attended at a specific time. If there is a solution for tourists to enjoy the same service without having to go through the hassle of booking ahead, the fun of walking around the park would be greatly increased. |
| |
| Goals |
| Build up a solution with GPS technology for the tourists to get to know the scenic spots. Multimedia materials are used to simulate a professional guide for the users to enjoy the park scenes without the restriction of time and space. |

GPS plus mobile GIS is the key technology for this case. GPS can retrieve the current position of a tourist in the park, whereas mobile GIS shows the spatial information of the park, such as the location of thematic rocks and recreational facilities. With a user-friendly interface, tourists can query any scenic point and listen to detailed introduction of the scenic spot on the mobile tourism device.
The mobile device will detect the scenic spots within a fixed distance from the tourist and any that are within this distance will pop-up. The determination of this range between the thematic rocks and the tourist is a trial process. Many rocks are located close to each other. For this case study, the optimum range to activate the scenic information is approximately 10-20 meters. If there are multiple points within this range, the information window will show one at one time.

Multimedia database is the main content for this case study, and most of the time and cost are spent on spatial technology development and testing. A lot of effort and cost are also put into the production of the multimedia database, for professional audio and text producers can make the digital content more acceptable for the tourist.
The case is implemented and executed in the Yeliu service area. Tourists can rent the device from the tourist center and walk around the park with it. For future expansions, the idea of mobile tourism guide device can look into a more advanced development and be implemented into more flexible instruments, such as packing the entire system onto a single SD-card. This system has a great potential to profit both geological tourism and park management. |
